Low Signal Mode

Low signal mode

As app developers utilising smartphone technology, some of the most common questions we are asked relate to how we tackle low signal and data connectivity.

In terms of health and safety, getting in touch with external support when needed is imperative, but can prove a hard task when attempted in areas of poor reception. As such, tackling the issue of low signal and ensuring our app users are always connected is an area we have focused heavily on.

Unlike many apps where low signal and data could prevent the app from running successfully, StaySafe’s app is not hindered by these elements. Our low signal mode means that employees can still check in safely and GPS location can always be tracked, even in areas of poor connectivity. As a result, the StaySafe app offers 16% more coverage than any other lone worker app.

How Low Signal mode works

The app will make a connection through data options including WIFI, 4G/3G, GPRS and Edge. If a data or WIFI connection is not possible, the StaySafe app offers a solution by automatically switching to low signal mode. In low signal mode the app utilises 2G connection to send SMS updates to the Hub. Functionality within the app will continue smoothly, including any alerts which may be triggered, so that the user’s location can still be updated and monitored.

Low signal mode is particularly crucial for lone workers based in more inaccessible areas, such as rural and underground environments.

Lone workers who benefit from low signal mode:

  • Field service engineers
  • Maintenance/repairmen
  • Surveyors
  • Landscapers
  • Outreach workers
  • Construction workers
  • Water and power plant workers
  • Health and social care workers
  • Property developers
For remote workers, areas of poor signal can be particularly dangerous when working alone. Workers are unable to signal for help to staff or managers using their device, due to lack of connectivity.
Low signal mode is the most effective way to overcome connectivity issues and allows a lone worker to reach out for support if they find themselves in a situation where they are confronted by an attack, suffer an injury, or worse if they are knocked unconscious. In such instances, a man-down or missed check-in alert will be sent, for the Hub to escalate further and provide rapid support to the lone worker.
