Annual data released last week by the HSE, reveal a slight rise in workplace fatalities over the last 2 years.
The HSE statistics show provisional UK figures for the number of fatal injuries caused by accidents in the workplace over the last year. While the general trend shows a decrease of almost half over the last 20 years, the last 2 years have seen a rise from 136 to 144 fatalities.
Workplace fatalities by sector
The data also reveals the number of fatalities across each sector. While the average of fatalities to 100,000 workers equalled 0.42 overall, industry averages rose to 7.73. The image below shows a ranking of the most dangerous industries based on average per 100,000 workers.

The HSE statistics also breaks down fatalities by location. As you can see from the image below, Scotland, North West England and London had the most workplace fatalities over the year while fatalities in the North East were low.

Sadly, 67 members of the public were also fatally injured in accidents connected to work in 2015/2016.
